Why Is My Well Pump Running Constantly?

If your pump won’t shut off, it’s working overtime — and a clock is ticking.

Common causes

  • Waterlogged pressure tank — the most common reason; the system can’t build pressure, so the pump keeps running.
  • Bad pressure switch — it never tells the pump to shut off.
  • A leak — a running toilet, dripping fixture, or underground line leak keeps demanding water.
  • Worn or undersized pump — it can’t reach cut-off pressure.
  • Dropping water level / well issue — less common, but possible.

Why you shouldn’t ignore it

A constantly running pump overheats, spikes your power bill, and wears out fast — the motor isn’t built to run non-stop.

What to do

Rule out leaks first (check toilets and fixtures). If there’s no leak, it’s usually the pressure tank or switch — both are repairable, often the same day. A pump that’s been running for days is on borrowed time, so don’t wait.
